Verdict
The Sun TI 700 MEG Platinum isn’t perfect: the grill/oven is set quite high, and the overhead lockers mean you can’t sit up in bed. But quality and style come together almost perfectly in this premium low-profile, and the Platinum specification levels really make this a motorhome that’s not to be missed.
Pros
Relative bargain
Lots of equipment
Clever design
Cons
Grill/oven is set quite high
You can’t sit up in bed
It’s a proven formula for sales success. Take some popular models, ramp them up with a whole host of extra equipment, add a supplementary name – Platinum, in this instance – maintain a competitive price, and bingo! Smart bargain-hunters will pounce.
For the 2018 season, then, Germany’s Knaus looked favourably on the UK with an exclusive specification for its five-strong Sun TI range of low-profile coachbuilts.
I viewed this example at Derby-based Don Amott Leisure Kingdom, one of seven UK Knaus dealers.
Quality and style come together almost perfectly in this premium low-profile.
Living
Front lounges such as this – swivel cab seats, L-shaped sofa, single inward-facing seat – are never going to be the largest, but they suffice. And the oval table, on a fixed pedestal but with plenty of fore, aft and height adjustment, is a plus.
Kitchen
The kitchen might seem small, but there is some clever worktop and storage design here. The configuration of the hob, for example, frees up worktop, while three large drawers, slide-out baskets and an overhead locker with a shelf are among storage offerings.
The location of the grill/over is too high, however.
Across the corridor is a 145-litre fridge, with automatic energy selector.
Washroom
The shower and toilet room are split – the former includes Dometic’s more upmarket ceramic-bowl loo, as well as a fixed basin and good storage.
Beds
All the usual permanent bed layouts are here – French, rear transverse, island, twin singles – with the 700 MEG on review here the longer of two versions sporting the latter.
The 700 MEG is not without criticism, of course. One of my main bugbears is the fact that overhead lockers mean you can’t sit upright on the single beds.
Storage
Storage is excellent, not least thanks to the generous garage, with floor rails for securing bikes.
The patented Service Box, offering external single-point access to electric hook-up, fresh water tank, dump valves, leisure battery, gas cylinder storage and more, is another great idea.
