Verdict
The Adria Sonic Supreme I 710 SL is up against some stiff competition when it comes to new motorhomes for 2016. Yet this sharp-looking A-class certainly takes the fight to the big German and French brands. Adria is perhaps best known for its low-profiles and van conversions, both of which are a common sight on UK roads and campsites. But the manufacturer also makes a fine A-class, in the shape of the Sonic, which has been part of the Slovenian manufacturer’s portfolio since 2010. Also available in Axess and Plus trim levels, Adria waited until last year’s Caravan Salon in Düsseldorf to unveil the revised Sonic models, the island bed I 710 SBC and twin single beds I 710 SL, on test here. Where better to line up against all those highly regarded German A-class motorhomes?
Indeed, the plucky Slovenian marque – which exports 98 per cent of its total production of motorhomes, caravans and holiday homes – is as accomplished as the German brands when it comes to selling itself in foreign markets. At Adria’s birthday celebrations earlier this year to mark its half-century of leisure-vehicle production, the company laid claim to be the biggest single-branded motorhome manufacturer in Europe.
Adria’s reputation for build quality is second-to-none
Living
With a number of seats to choose from, the I 710 SL has a very sociable lounge. Five adults can be accommodated in comfort, or six if the false seat behind the passenger is pressed into action (this will normally be stowed during transit). The rectangular lounge table sits on a sturdy leg and can be easily slid into the desired position, for example closer to the rotated cab seats or the nearside single sofa.
An extensive range of ambient lighting will complement the daylight from the cab, nearside window and skylight; this includes strip lights in the base of the drop-down bed, which frame four task lights, over-locker lighting and mood lighting in the skylight surround. It all lends a classy feel, and does wonders for the ambience of the lounge.
Our test ’van came with the ‘Forest’ furnishings scheme (‘Horizon’ is also available): this features a rich wood colour, paired with beige finishes under the overhead lockers and on the lounge walls and bulkheads. Nets are used in preference to curtains, as is the Continental way, with chocolate and cream ‘White Santos’ soft furnishings.
Kitchen
A small, L-shaped kitchen is sited on the nearside, just behind the lounge. It has a sink on the left-hand side atop three soft-closing drawers, plus a combination oven and grill to its right. A trio of gas burners lies under the kitchen window, which has an illuminated wipe-clean splashback, while an extractor fan sits between two task lights in the bottom of the overhead lockers. On the opposite side, a 150-litre fridge with separate freezer completes the generous kitchen specification.
Washroom
A fully specified washroom features in the I 710 SL, with a nearside shower compartment and toilet and vanity unit on the offside. The toilet door can be opened and secured to the door frame next to the kitchen; this means that the bedroom area can be used for dressing, without a sight-line from the front of the ’van if the blinds are open.
Beds
With rear twin single beds plus an electrically operated drop-down-double over the lounge, the I 710 SL offers touring couples the comforts of home, with the added provision of accommodation for occasional guests.
The rear single beds measure 1.99m/1.88m x 0.85m (6’6”/6’2” x 2’9”). The drop-down double measures 1.9m x 1.5m (6’3” x 4’11”).
Storage
There are many storage options throughout the ’van. A large heated rear garage can be accessed from either side of the vehicle; it has plenty of headroom available for loading tall items like cycles or scooters. Inside, there are nine overhead lockers, a wardrobe and cupboards under the foot of both single beds. The double floor also offers storage, with deep compartments for valuables and shoes, while wet items can be stored in a lined compartment on the nearside of the ’van.
