Auto-Trail is exhibiting the latest addition to its Ford-based Excel range at the Motorhome and Caravan Show this week at the NEC.

It’s also displaying its newly launched optional rising roof on another model in the Ford-based range.

Introduced last season, the Excel range is a compact low-profile range designed to go around country lanes and tight city corners more easily. Even with mirrors extended, the vehicles are only 2.24m wide.

The 6.2m-long 620S takes the model tally up to five, and introduces a two-berth to the range for the first time.

It has an end kitchen with a three-burner gas-only hob and combined oven and grill, a corner washroom, and two parallel sofas in the front lounge that can be made into a double but also should work as single beds for most people.

The optional rising roof – a very unusual feature on low-profile motorhomes – is similar to the one that already graces Auto-Trail’s Expedition and Adventure campervans.

It is available on all Excel models for an extra £5450, and provides you with a 2m-long double bed plus swan neck reading lights and a convenient cubbyhole for leaving a book or glasses.

The roof fastens down with a metal clasp and seat-belt style buckle. Unusually, the ladder up to it clips on the front side of the hatch, away from the bed itself. The canvas of the roof includes mesh windows you can unzip.

The new addition to the Auto-Trail Excel range is one of a number of new releases being exhibited at the October NEC Show, with Bailey debuting the new additions to its Endeavour range of campervans.
