Regular readers of Practical Motorhome will notice that we’ve introduced a new category for our awards this year, that of Best Green Initiative in motorhoming. That’s because we feel it’s important to recognise that our hobby has an impact on the environment; we do our best to minimise that impact, of course, but it has an effect all the same.
That’s why this year we’ve created a special award, for the people, company or product that we believe recognises this and shows a positive impact in improving sustainability or ecological impact. Our team has carefully considered a number of initiatives across the industry before coming up with our winner.
There’s a lot more that we can all do, of course, but small steps are the way forward when it comes to making motorhoming more environmentally friendly. If we can all take just a small amount more responsibility, we’ll make big progress – and we think this year’s winner at the Practical Motorhome Awards 2025 is a brilliant start.
The best green initiative in motorhoming is:
Knaus Cleanflex
- Web: www.knaus.com/en-uk/cleanflex/
- Features include: Battery-powered operation, hygienic film technology, no water or chemicals required
A number of motorhome-washroom innovations have appeared over the decades, but our eye was instantly caught this year by the announcement from German manufacturer Knaus of the introduction of its new Cleanflex toilet system. It eliminates the need for even the best motorhome toilet chemical – and water – completely, instead employing biodegradable film to capture waste safely and hygienically. It’s then deposited into a holding container below the bowl, free from smells and ready for you to collect and dispose of in a bin.
That’s clever enough in itself – and brilliant for the environment, of course – but it’s also extremely flexible. Because it uses no water connection, motorhome designers can place it wherever they like, providing more freedom when it comes to motorhome layouts – and you can even push the toilet away after use, allowing to free up more space in the shower. It’s due to arrive as an option on Knaus motorhomes very soon, and we think it will soon catch on: it’s ecologically friendly, simple, innovative and a very welcome addition to motorhome design going forward.
