Having the best portable toilet for a campervan can really make a difference to your touring experience, providing you with the flexibility of knowing you can use the toilet at any time.

While some of the models that made it onto our best campervan guide, such as the Ford Nugget Plus, come with a fixed toilet, some, such as the Volkswagen Caddy California, do not. This is where having a portable toilet can come into its own – for instance, if you’ve pitched up at a campervan campsite and it’s the middle of the night, you won’t need to dart out to the facilities block if you need to go.

In this guide, we’re sharing our pick of the best portable campervan toilets, featuring brands such as Thetford, Dometic, and Kampa.

The best portable campervan toilets are:

Thetford Porta Potti 165

Thetford Porta Potti 165

  • Open dimensions: 41.4 x 39 x 43cm
  • Weight: 3.90kg
  • Waste tank capacity: 21 litres
  • Flushing tank capacity: 15 litres

Reason to buy:

  • Good tank capacity, lightweight

Reason to avoid:

  • No level indicator

This portable campervan toilet is made by Thetford, a well-known and trusted name within the touring world.

Made up of two easily detachable sections, the Porta Potti 165 offers both durability and practicality. The lower section holds the waste tank (which has a 21-litre capacity), while the upper section houses the flush-water tank (which has a 15-litre capacity) and the bowl, along with a cover and seat that can be detached.

We like that you can add any flush-water fluid or water straight into the flush-water tank of the 165, which operates with a bellows pump.

Another feature we appreciate is the useful vent button – this means you should avoid any splashing when it’s time to empty it, helping to make the process a more pleasant experience.

Thetford Porta Potti 365

  • Dimensions: 41.4 x 39 x 43cm
  • Waste tank capacity: 21 litres
  • Flush tank capacity: 15 litres
  • Weight: 4kg

Reason to buy:

  • Useful level indicator, good tank capacity

Reason to avoid:

  • No toilet roll holder

Unlike the Thetford Porta Potti 165, the 365 is a portable toilet for your campervan which operates with a piston pump.

We appreciate the level indicator that comes with this more expensive option too, giving you advance warning of when the tank needs emptying. When it’s time, you can use the vent button and cover lock to make the process that bit easier – the former also means splashing should be avoided too.

Like the 165, the two separate sections of the Thetford product are easy to attach and then take apart as required. The waste tank has a 21-litre capacity, while the flush tank provides a 15-litre capacity.

Outdoor Revolution Big Loo Portable Toilet Bucket

  • Capacity: 20 litres
  • Weight: 5kg

Reason to buy:

  • Good capacity, budget-friendly

Reason to avoid:

  • No flush

If you’re after a budget-friendly portable toilet for a campervan that could see you through the night when you don’t want to make the trip to your campsite’s facilities, Outdoor Revolution’s Big Loo could be the best option for you. It does just what it says on the tin, providing a quick and easy-to-use portable toilet.

It offers a decent 20-litre capacity and comes with a carry handle to make its 5kg weight easier to transport.

Blue Diamond Eco-Friendly Composting Toilet

Blue Diamond Eco-Friendly Composting Toilet

  • Dimensions: 42 x 32 x 52cm
  • Liquid container capacity: 8 litres
  • Solids container capacity: 7.5 litres
  • Weight: 7.80kg

Reason to buy:

  • Eco-friendly, no water or chemicals needed

Reason to avoid:

  • Most expensive option on our guide

If you’re looking for an eco-friendly option, this could be the best portable campervan toilet for you.

Made by Blue Diamond, it’s unique in our guide as it doesn’t require water or chemicals to operate. Instead, it is advised that a biodegradable liner is used in the solids container, as well as applying a sprinkling of wood shavings, sawdust or similar after each use. This not only helps to start the composting process, but should also prevent any strong odours.

Able to bear a weight of 200kg, it has two separate containers, one an 8-litre liquids container, and another a 7.5-litre solids container.

For ease during transportation, both waste containers can be taken out and sealed – this includes a screw lid for the liquid container, and a lid and carry handle for the solids container.

The rest of the portable toilet is split into three sections – the base container, the middle split bowl, and the hinged lid.

Dometic 972 Portable Toilet

Dometic 972 Portable Toilet

  • Dimensions: 33.3 x 31.7 x 38.7 cm
  • Waste tank capacity: 9.8 litres
  • Flushing tank capacity: 8.7 litres
  • Weight: 4.68kg

Reason to buy:

  • Tank level indicator, space-saving

Reason to avoid:

  • Tank capacity could be limiting

Like Thetford, Dometic is another well-known brand, and this portable toilet for a campervan is a convenient option for touring. It’s simple to operate, thanks to the push button, while the tank level indicator will let you keep an eye on when it’s time to empty it.

It’s one of the more space-saving options to feature in our guide, with its 9.8-litre waste holding tank meaning it has more compact dimensions than the other flushing portable campervan toilet options to make it into our guide – we like the portability it offers as a result. However, this does mean it could need emptying on a more regular basis.

We like that mess should be kept to a minimum, thanks to the pivoting discharge spout. It also comes in a matte finish, which should be easy to clean and is also scratch-resistant. If you’re looking for a small portable toilet for your campervan, this could be the one for you.

Thetford Porta Potti 565E

Thetford Porta Potti 565E

  • Dimensions: 44.8 x 38.8 x 45.0 cm
  • Waste tank capacity: 21 litres
  • Flushing tank capacity: 15 litres
  • Weight: 5kg

Reason to buy:

  • Electric flush, toilet roll holder

Reason to avoid:

  • Premium price

The Thetford 565E is the only electric flush option to make it onto our list, requiring batteries to operate. We like the inclusion of a level indicator for both the waste-holding and flush-water tanks – these are both capable of holding 21 litres and 15 litres respectively.

It has a stylish design, even coming with an integrated toilet roll holder for added ease, with the trade-off being its slightly bulkier design.

It’s expensive, but if you’re looking for a more luxurious portable toilet, this could be the one for you.

Dometic 976 Portable Toilet
Dometic 976 Portable Toilet – image: Amazon

Dometic 976 Portable Toilet

  • Dimensions: 33.3 x 38.7 x 38.7 cm
  • Waste tank capacity: 18.9 litres
  • Flushing tank capacity: 8.7 litres
  • Weight: 4.99kg

Reason to buy:

  • More waste tank capacity than the Dometic 972 portable toilet

Reason to avoid:

  • One of the more expensive options on our guide

This portable campervan toilet from Dometic is a larger version of the 972, coming with a waste tank capacity of 18.9 litres, as opposed to 8.7 litres in the more compact option. This means it’s a bit bigger than its smaller counterpart and weighs a bit more too. Despite this, it’s still fairly small, and at less than 5kg, it’s a manageable weight too, so should be fairly easy to transport.

It’s operated by an easy-to-use push button. We like the indicator it comes with – this provides you with a useful way of keeping an eye on the level of the tank, so you know when it needs emptying. Another handy feature is the pivoting discharge spout – this is extra long, so you should avoid any splashing when you’re emptying it.

Kampa Khazi

Kampa Khazi Portable toilet

  • Dimensions:  35 x 36 x 45 cm
  • Capacity: 5 litres
  • Weight: 2.23kg

Reason to buy:

  • Very lightweight, budget-friendly, toilet roll holder

Reason to avoid:

  • Capacity is low

This is another non-flushing option, providing a 5-litre waste capacity.

When it’s time to empty, simply remove the waste container (this also comes with a lid). A feature we particularly like is the toilet roll holder – this has been integrated into its design.

It’s also an incredibly lightweight option, weighing only 2.23kg, giving you a product that is easy to move around as required.
