Picking the best motorhome toilet chemical will be an important job. After all, the prospect of emptying the toilet cassette is not the most appealing of tasks, but having the right products can make it a much less daunting chore.

Whether you’re pitched up at one of the best motorhome sites or are staying off-grid, chances are you’ll want to use the facilities onboard your ‘van, but keeping the toilet fresh and clean will be an important part of an enjoyable touring experience. This is because motorhome toilet chemicals reduce unpleasant odours and help to break down the waste, liquefying it for easier disposal.

There are three main types of toilet chemicals for a motorhome. This includes blue, which will go into the waste cassette, and pink, which goes into the flush reservoir. There are also combined products, which are able to go in both the waste cassette and flush reservoir, giving you the benefit of not needing to store two bottles on tour with you. Then, after flushing, the end result will be a disinfected and fragranced loo.

If your ‘van doesn’t come with a toilet and you’re looking for an option, don’t miss our best portable toilets for a campervan guide either.

In this guide, we’re rounding up our pick of the best motorhome toilet chemicals on the market, to help you find the right one for you.

Fenwick’s Top & Tail Toilet Fluid

  • Size: 2.5 litres

Reason to buy:

  • Can be used in both the top and bottom tanks

Reason to avoid:

  • Only available in one size that could be bulky to store

Fenwick’s is a well-known brand in the ‘van cleaning sphere, with its cleaner making the shortlist for the best motorhome cleaner at the Practical Motorhome Awards 2024. It’s the Top & Tail Toilet Fluid we’re looking at here, a product that we think is well worth considering if you want to keep your motorhome toilet in tip-top condition.

We like that it can be used in both the top and bottom tanks, providing an efficient way of dealing with waste and bacteria, while ensuring your toilet stays fresh. We also like how the Fenwick’s product has the added benefit of ensuring you won’t need to take two different bottles on tour with you.

We should highlight that as it’s only available in a 2.5-litre size, you’ll need room to store the bottle. This contrasts with the smaller size of other motorhome toilet chemicals, such as the Thetford options – there may be two of them, but they’re each only 750ml.

However, we like that the formaldehyde-free product also leaves the toilet with slip agents, helping to keep everything working as it should.

Thetford Toilet Fluid and Rinse Concentrate

  • Size: both 750ml

Reason to buy:

  • Reputable brand, small size for easy storage provided

Reason to avoid:

  • Relatively premium price

Thetford is a name that all motorhomers are likely to be familiar with, providing trustworthy products that enhance the touring experience. As a result, it’s no surprise that we reckon this double pack of Aqua Kem Blue and Aqua Rinse will offer an efficient way of ensuring waste is dealt with in your ‘van. While there’s no getting away from the relatively premium price of these products, we like how they should provide an effective way of keeping on top of your toilet.

After applying Aqua Kem Blue to the waste tank, it will make it easier to empty by liquefying the waste, while it will also help to lower the build up of gases and prevent any unpleasant smells. The Aqua Rinse can then be used to create a protective layer, helping to prevent bacteria from building up and creating a smoother flush.

Plus, we think their compact size will make these an ideal option for ‘van owners with more limited storage options.

Pro-Kleen Caravan Toilet Chemicals

  • Size: Both 2 litres

Reason to buy:

  • Twin pack offers good value for money

Reason to avoid:

  • Bulky to store

We like how these eco-friendly, formaldehyde-free toilet chemicals from Pro-Kleen offer a budget-friendly way of keeping your motorhome toilet clean and fresh.

This twin pack comes with a two-litre bottle of both blue toilet fluid and pink toilet rinse.

The blue toilet cleaning formula will deal with any odours and break down the waste for straightforward removal. As well as this, the pink fluid can be used on the flush tank to combat smells and provide the toilet with a protective layer. This not only gives you easier flushing, but also helps to ensure all of the waste is dealt with.

The end result will be a toilet which is much easier to maintain. We’d just advise making sure you have enough room to store both bottles when you’re on the move.

Dirtbusters Toilet Fluid

Dirtbusters Motorhome and Caravan Toilet Fluid

Reason to buy:

  • Ideal for those who don’t want a flush chemical

Reason to avoid:

  • Will require a separate flush chemical

This powerful and biodegradable toilet chemical from Dirtbusters will allow you to keep your toilet in excellent condition.

We like how you can rely on this formaldehyde-free product to eradicate odours and break down any solids, making them easy to remove. You get two litres of the product, which should provide up to 20 uses.

While we should point out that a separate flush chemical will need to be purchased, we reckon this will be an ideal motorhome toilet chemical for those who just want a toilet fluid.

Elsan Organic Toilet Fluid

Elsan Organic Toilet Fluid and Rinse

Reason to buy:

  • A two-in-one fluid and rinse , organic toilet chemical

Reason to avoid:

  • Relatively expensive compared to other options

This Elsan toilet fluid can be relied upon to naturally dissolve waste and eradicate odours. One of our favourite things about this product is the absence of harsh chemicals – this has the added benefit of meaning you don’t have to deal with any overtly chemical scents too.

We also like how the organic product can be used as both a fluid and a rinse, giving you a more compact option for a motorhome toilet chemical and saving space when you’re packing your ‘van. It’s available in both two-litre and 400ml bottles, so you can get the size that best suits your requirements, with the latter size easy to store while you’re on tour. However, if you’re looking for value for money, the two-litre bottle is hard to beat.

Aqua Kem Green

Aqua Kem Green Concentrated

  • Size: 750ml

Reason to buy:

  • Two-in-one product that is relatively easy to store

Reason to avoid:

  • Fairly expensive for its size

Aqua Kem Green Concentrated offers motorhome owners an environmentally-friendly way of maintaining their toilets. Providing users with odour control, it helps to limit gas build-up and makes the tank easier to empty, as the toilet chemicals can be used to liquify the waste. Plus, as it’s only 750ml, it’s easy to transport and store when you’re packing for your tour.

One thing we should highlight is its price. As it’s only 750ml, it’s a relatively pricey option for its size. However, we think its portability and effectiveness makes it a great option for motorhome owners to consider.

Bottom & Top

OLPRO Bottom & Top

  • Size: 2-litres

Reason to buy:

  • Two-in-one product which can be used in both the waste and flush tanks, wallet-friendly

Reason to avoid:

  • Two litre bottle could be bulky to store

We like how this environmentally-friendly OLPRO product can be used in both the top tank and bowl, offering a budget-friendly way of keeping on top of waste in your motorhome toilet.

It’s simple to use, coming pre-mixed, giving you an effective way of ensuring your toilet stays in a good condition and free of any bacteria. The formaldehyde-free chemical comes in two-litre bottles and requires 50ml in every 10 litres. While it can be bought as a single product, we’d be tempted to purchase it as a twin pack, which we think offers excellent value for money.

Blue Diamond "When Nature Calls 2L Toilet Fluid"

Blue Diamond “When Nature Calls 2L Toilet Fluid”

  • Size: 2 litres

Reason to buy:

  • Can be used in hard water areas

Reason to avoid:

  • Other duo use toilet chemicals offer better value for money

We like how this formaldehyde-free concentrated toilet cleaner offers a straightforward way of keeping your motorhome toilet smelling fresh and pleasant. The bio-degradable toilet chemical will leave what is described by Blue Diamond as a “medicated fragrance”, and it offers a great way to keep your facilities clean and usable. We also think it’s useful that the manufacturer has advised it will work well in hard water areas.

Maypole Superior Toilet Fluid and Toilet Rinse

Maypole Superior Toilet Rinse & Fluid

  • Size: 2 litres per bottle

Reason to buy:

  • Double pack offers good value for money

Reason to avoid:

  • The twin pack will be quite big to store

These eco-friendly chemical cleaners from Maypole are ideal for keeping your motorhome’s toilet in excellent condition. Providing a pleasant scent, this double pack comes with a fluid and a rinse. The former will break down waste, leaving a fresh smell behind, while the rinse can then be used to disinfect the loo, keeping it free of bacteria.

We like that the Toilet Fluid is formaldehyde-free, while the Toilet Rinse leaves a pleasant aroma behind in your van’s bathroom – always a plus!

How to choose the best motorhome toilet chemicals

The best motorhome toilet chemical will offer an efficient and effective way of keeping your toilet fresh when you’re pitched up. The most environmentally friendly options are formaldehyde-free, and it’s worth noting that some campsites will only allow waste to be disposed of if formaldehyde hasn’t been used.

There are three types available.

The first type is waste-tank chemicals. These are added to the tank to break down waste and paper, ensuring things stay smelling fresh. Make sure the option you’re thinking of is definitely suitable for the waste tank in your ‘van – these will usually have a blue liquid. While they’re also available in tablet form, the majority of motorhomers stick to the bottled variety. When applying, be sure to add these via the cassette outlet spout as opposed to via the toilet bowl – otherwise, you could risk damaging them.

Then there are toilet flush chemicals, which are generally pink and will be added to your toilet’s flush tank. Not every motorhomer will opt to use a flush chemical, with some preferring to use fresh water.

The last type of toilet chemical for a motorhome is a combined product, such as Fenwick Top & Tail. These may cost a bit more but they can be used in both the cassette waste tank and the flush water tank. This has the benefit of meaning you only need a single bottle when you’re on the road, instead of having to carry both types.

Once you’ve decided on the type you want for your ‘van, you’ll be well on your way to choosing the right one.
